As a small part of the larger history of the Cregan-Gill family, here we look at the children of Henry William Joseph Gill (Henry Jnr) and his wife, Kathleen Gill (nee Shields).
Henry Gill Jnr was born in South Lismore on 22/09/1891. From the age of four, he grew up in the Tweed valley, and he lived nearly all his life in different parts of that area. Henry Jnr married Kathleen Shields in 1920. Together, they had ten children, all born in Murwillumbah (seven boys and three girls):
Each of the Gill children has their own section on this page.

Edward Henry GillEdward Henry Gill was born on 06/01/1921. We have a copy of Edward's birth certificate. As with all of his siblings, Edward was born in the Sunnyside Private Hospital in Murwillumbah. As a youth, Edward was in trouble with the law a number of times for breaking and entering, such as a case of stealing from a Murwillumbah service station on 24/02/1940. Edward served the country in WWII and was presumed killed in action in Malaya in February 1942 (Service Number NX71934). As with Jack Anderson, the date of birth on the Attestation Form for Edward is one year earlier than the real date, and presumably for the same reason of gaining eligibility. Opposite is Edward's enlistment photo, and below that is another photo of Edward. We also have a copy of Edward's death certificate. The third photo opposite is of Edward Gill (left) at army training with his brother-in-law Edward Allan Nunan (centre) and another unrelated soldier. A photo of Edward Gill in uniform also appeared in the Tweed Daily.   |

Robert Joseph GillRobert Joseph Gill was born on 06/01/1923. We have a copy of Robert's birth certificate. Robert served in the RAAF in WWII, enlisting on 07/02/1941 and being discharged on 16/11/1945. A photo of him appeared in the Tweed Daily. His enlistment photo is opposite, and below that is another photo of him. Robert Gill married Ethany Avis Wright on 06/01/1945 in the St Brigid's Catholic Church, Marrickville. We have a copy of their marriage certificate. Like Robert, Ethany was a corporal in the RAAF. We have a copy of her enlistment photo. Reportedly, Robert and Ethany Gill lived in the Newcastle area in the first two years after marrying. In fact, in March 1946 they were living in Kilaben Bay on the shores of Lake Macquarie, according to the birth certificate of their first child. They were still at that location in October 1947 when their second child was born. However, by 1948, they were living at 91 River Street, South Murwillumbah, which was the home of Robert's father, Harry Gill. Robert was working as a hairdresser then, as he had been at Kilaben Bay. Aroud 1951, Robert and Ethany moved to 9 Stratton Street, Fortitude Valley, with Robert still doing hairdressing. But just a year or two later, they moved again to 68 Brinawa Street, Camp Hill, also in Brisbane. Robert then began working as a machinist, according to electoral rolls. That was still Robert's home when he died on 01/11/1965 at age 42 in the Princess Alexandra Hospital, South Brisbane. He was buried in the Mount Gravatt Cemetery and Crematorium. We have a copy of Robert's death certificate. Ethany Gill lived at Brinawa Street for a few more years before moving, in about 1971, to 14 Blackfriars Drive, Carina. Ethany died on 03/09/1983 and was buried alongside Robert. Their shared tombstone is shown opposite. Robert and Ethany Gill had the following three children: Robert James born 26/03/1946, Dianne Therese born 26/10/1947, and Maree Ann born 03/07/1953.   |

Yvonne Mary GillYvonne Mary Gill was born on 08/03/1924. We have a copy of Yvonne's birth certificate. Opposite is a photo of her. Yvonne served in the AWAS (Australian Women's Army Service) during WWII (Service Number: QF267827), enlisting on 02/01/1943 and being discharged on 16/08/1946. Prior to that, she lived in Murwillumbah. Yvonne was said to be stationed at Victoria Park in Brisbane in October 1945. After her discharge, Yvonne remained in Brisbane. She was living in Molonga Terrace, Graceville, when, on 03/01/1949, her engagement to another member of the defence forces, James Chapman Clark, was announced. We have a copy of James's enlistment photo. Yvonne and James were married on 23/04/1949 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Murwillumbah. We have a copy of their marriage certificate. It says that they were living at separate addresses in the Brisbane suburb of Annerley at the time, with Yvonne working as a hairdresser and James as a customs officer. After their marriage, James and Yvonne Clark moved to Townsville, where they lived at 2 Coulls Flats, 28 Nelson Street, with James working as a public servant. They stayed there until the mid-1950s, when they returned to Brisbane, living then at 10 Lewis Street, Camp Hill. This was several blocks from where Yvonne's brother Robert Gill was living, in Brinawa Street, Camp Hill. Electoral rolls show that the Clarks moved to 304 Cornwall Street, Greenslopes, in 1964, then returned to their old Lewis Street address around 1971. Additionally, through most of the 1970s, the rolls list Yvonne as a proprietress, though we do not know of what type of business. James and Yvonne later moved to 7 Cornflower Street, Mansfield, around 1981. James Chapman Clark died on 14/03/1984. After James's death, Yvonne remained at Cornflower Street until about 1992, when she moved to 8/71 Chatsworth Road, Greenslopes. Around ten years later, in 2002, she moved from there to 56/30 Weller Road, Tarragindi, also in Brisbane's southern suburbs. This was in the Gresham Gardens residential development. Yvonne died on 01/05/2021. Yvonne and James Clark had three children (all girls): Colleen Patricia born 02/03/1950, Christine Ann born 1951, and Catherine Mary born 1963.   |

Henry Thomas (Harry) GillHenry Thomas (Harry) Gill was born on 25/12/1925. We have a copy of Henry's birth certificate. Henry joined the Australian army for WWII, enlisting on 15/11/1943 and being discharged on 22/06/1947. He served in the Australian post-war occupation forces, being stationed firstly in Morotai and then in Japan. Opposite is Henry's enlistment photo, and below that is another photo of him. After his discharge, Henry returned to Murwillumbah and in 1949 was living at his father's home at 91 River Road, South Murwillumbah. By 1953, he had moved to King Street, Murwillumbah. He was a shopkeeper through these years, leasing a small shop at 33 Ewing Street from 1948 to 1957. This old-fashioned shop still exists today as a little variety store. Henry married Heather May Gressinger in St Carthage's Cathedral, Lismore, on 17/03/1956. Henry and Heather lived at 135 Commercial Road, Murwillumbah, after their marriage. Around 1958 - 1959, after leaving his store, Henry became a taxi proprieter in Murwillumbah, according to electoral rolls. Little is known of Henry and Heather Gill through most of the 1960s, but, by 1968, they had moved to 60 Tranters Avenue, Camp Hill, in Brisbane, with Henry working as a salesman. They stayed there until around 1987, when they moved to 15 Ambrosius Street, Carindale. That is the last address we know for Henry and Heather. Henry Thomas Gill died on 22/12/2016. He was buried in the Hemmant Cemetery and Crematorium, and his death notice appeared in the Courier Mail. Heather May Gill died on 09/08/2022, and she was buried alongside Henry in Hemmant Cemetery. Heather's death notice also appeared in the Courier Mail. Opposite is Henry's and Heather's shared burial plaque. Henry and Heather Gill had five children (three boys and two girls): Deborah Ann, Robyn Maree, Ian Thomas, (Henry) Mark born 23/09/1962, and John Anthony.   |

Brian Patrick GillBrian Patrick Gill was born on 05/07/1927. We have a copy of Brian's birth certificate. Brian joined the Australian army to fight in the Korean War. The photo opposite of Brian serving in Korea is from the Australian War Memorial. Below that is another photo we have of him. Brian Gill married Mary Irene Twomey on 13/03/1954 in Dalby. Mary had also served in the defence forces. We have a copy of her enlistment photo. Until around 1958, Brian was still a soldier and living with Mary at 100 Hall Street, Alderley, near the Enoggera army barracks. Afterwards, he became a sales rep and they moved to 59 Sycamore Street, Inala, in Brisbane's south-western suburbs. In the early 1960s, Brian and Mary moved once again within Brisbane, to 123 Beddoes Street, Holland Park. By 1972, Brian and Mary had left Brisbane and moved to 3 Leyte Street, Mt Druitt, in Sydney's western suburbs. There, Brian continued his career as a sales rep. They lived at Mt Druitt until around 1981. They then returned to the Brisbane area, living firstly at 252 Bay Terrace, Wynnum, and then, about two years later, moving to 62 Kamarin Street in nearby Manly West. They lived there for many years afterwards. Brian Patrick Gill died on 13/05/1999 and was buried in the Mt Gravatt Cemetery. Mary Irene Gill (nee Twomey) died on 15/06/2014. Her death notice was published in the Courier Mail. It indicates that Mary was last residing in Annerley, in Brisbane. Previously, in 2008, she was living at 11/27 Fernberg Road, Paddington, in Brisbane, according to electoral rolls. Brian and Mary Gill had seven children (three boys and four girls): Steven John, born 1956; Ronda Elizabeth, born 1957; Edward Anthony, born 1959; Bernadette Therese, born 1960; Suzanne Mary, born 1961; Christopher Alan, born 1966; Michelle Catherine, born 1968.   |

Noela Therese GillNoela Therese Gill was born on 28/07/1927. We have a copy of Noela's birth certificate. We also have a photo of her, shown opposite. Noela married Edward Allen Nunan on 03/09/1949 in Church of the Sacred Heart, Murwillumbah. Edward Nunan had served in the army, enlisting on 25/03/1941 and being discharged on 22/11/1945 (Service Number: NX71947). We have a copy of Edward's enlistment photo. We also have a copy of their marriage certificate. It says that Noela was living at her father's River Street house at the time, working as a bus conductress. We think that Edward and Noela Nunan lived initially in Shirley Flats, Tweed Street, Tweed Heads. The 1954 Electoral Roll lists Edward there, as a labourer, but Noela is not listed for some reason. (Tweed Street was the old name for that part of Wharf Street south of its Bay Street intersection.) However, by 1956, the Nunans had moved to York Street, Murwillumbah. There, Edward began working as a stock inspector. Coincidentally, this is about the time that Noela's father, Harry Gill, stopped being a stock inspector, so Edward possibly took over Harry's role. Edward kept this job until his death. In 1963, Edward and Noela bought a house around the corner at 15 George Street, Murwillumbah, and they lived there many years. Edward Nunan died on 30/07/1980. He was buried in the Murwillumbah Lawn Cemetery. In 1985, Noela Nunan moved back to Tweed Heads, at 1/42 Enid Street, and then to 2/6 Monterey Avenue, Banora Point, around 2006. Noela Nunan (nee Gill) died on 03/01/2021. She was buried alongside Edward. Noela's death notice, published in the Tweed Valley Weekly, is shown opposite. Below that are the adjacent tombstones of Edward and Noela. Noela Nunan spent much of her life involved in voluntary work in her local Tweed communities. An article in the Tweed Daily News, 01/03/2011, tells of Noela's life and her many good works and achievements over the years. Noela and Edward had five children (four boys and one girl): Margaret Ann, Geoffrey Colin, Allan Edward, Peter John, and Wayne Michael (Mick). Geoffrey and Allan are twins.   |

Denise Ann GillDenise Ann Gill was born on 31/12/1930. We have a copy of Denise's birth certificate. We also have a photo of her, shown opposite. Denise passed her Intermediate Certificate in Mount St Patrick's, Murwillumbah, in 1945. The last information we have for Denise living in Murwillumbah is from 1947, when she was playing basketball for the town's B grade team. The 1952 and 1954 electoral rolls show Denise to have been living at 11 Cleveland Street, Townsville, and working as a clerk-typist. In 1955, she was living in Regent Street in the same town. Denise joined her father in living at 100 Hall Street, Alderley, by 1958, when he moved there from the Tweed district. Also living at that Hall Street address then were Denise's brother and sister-in-law, Brian Patrick and Mary Irene Gill. Denise married William Charles Farmer on 09/05/1959 at St Thomas's Catholic Church in Camp Hill, Brisbane. We have a copy of their marriage certificate. It says that Denise was then living at 8 Fifth Ave, Wilston in Brisbane, working as a clerk. We don't know where the couple lived in their first few years of marriage, but by 1963 they were living at 42 Leyton Street, Grange, quite close to Denise's previous Hall Street home. William was working there as a building foreman. Denise and William Farmer moved a number of times around Queensland during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1966, they moved to 5 Schloss Street, Toowoomba. They then lived in various places in the Yeppoon/Rockhampton area: Cathne Street, Cooee Bay (Yeppoon), (1968 - 1970); then 6 Adelaide Street, Yeppoon, (1970 - 1973); then 117 Canoona Road, Rockhampton, (1973 - 1986); then Lot 2 Gum Tree Lane, Glenlee (Rockhampton) (1986 - ). Years given here are approximate. In the 1990s, they moved to an apartment at 13/1111 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach. William Farmer died on 30/12/2013, aged 85 according to his death notice published in the Gold Coast Bulletin. Denise died on 30/04/2023. Denise and William had four children: (two boys and two girls): Paul Anthony, Pamela Denise, Gavin, and Jillann Frances. Paul and Pamela are twins.   |

John Shields GillJohn Shields Gill was born on 06/04/1932. We have a copy of John's birth certificate. We also have a photo of John, shown opposite. John Gill was killed in action in the Korean War on 04/09/1952 at the age of 20. His memorial plaque is in the Bray Park Cemetery and is shown on our main family history page. We have a copy of John's death certificate. The Australian War Memorial web site has a photo of John ("Jack") Gill in Korea the month before his death. John is the soldier standing and shirtless.   |

(Francis) Patrick Gill(Francis) Patrick Gill was born on 28/07/1934. We have a copy of Patrick's birth certificate. We also have a photo of Patrick, shown opposite. We don't have much information on Patrick, but for many years he worked as a school teacher and lived at 18 Hartley St, Spring Hill, in Brisbane. Late in life, Patrick moved to Potts Point in Sydney. He died on 17/12/2019. His death notice, shown opposite, appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on 20/12/2019.   |

(Rodney) Michael GillMichael Gill was born on 23/11/1936. Opposite is a photo of Michael. Michael Gill had a career as an officer in the Australian Army. He fought in the Vietnam War during 1967 and 1969-1970. Sometime before 1963, Michael Gill married Caroline Rose Outhwaite. Michael and Caroline lived in Brisbane, Sydney, and Townsville throughout their lives. They were living at 60 Stellmach Street, Everton Park, in Brisbane, up to about 1963, when they moved to 49 Granville Street, Smithfield, in Sydney. Around 1968, they moved to Lot 8 Dalrymple Road, Vincent, a suburb of Townsville. They had returned to Everton Park, in Brisbane, by 1975, but this time living at 5 Frater Street. In the early 1980s, Michael moved to 95 Seventh Avenue, St Lucia, though we think that he had, by then, separated from Caroline. He lived there until at least 1999 but has since moved. Caroline Gill died on 14/05/2006. She was buried in the Hemmant Cemetery and Crematorium. We think that Michael Gill is still living in year 2022 in Brisbane. Michael and Caroline Gill had three children (one boy and two girls): Peter John, Sharon, and Madonna.   |
